Disney 'defector' shows off his stuff

Michael Walsh

In 1979 they called it "the great Disney defection." Animator Don Bluth left the Walt Disney cartoon stable to found his own studio. He took with him a commitment to Disney quality and many of the younger Disney animators.

Now, with The Secret of NIMH, opening today at the Park Royal, Richmond Square and Columbia, [editors note: the Columbia was one of the theatres I saw NIMH in myself. Today, it's a strip club. Sigh.] Bluth is introducing "the second age of animation." Lovingly crafted, his new movie is an attention-grabbing cartoon feature following the adventures of Mrs. Brisby, a brave widow-mouse determined to save her home and children from almost certain destruction.
